A Sous Chef Profile tells wxrks' AI how to translate: the subject of the content, who will read it, how formal it should be, its tone, and a written brief. Usually your Project Manager or Account Admin chooses it for the project. In the editor, the Sous Chef Profile tab shows which profile the AI is using for the document you have open. The editor calls each document a work unit: one file of a project, in one language pair. If the document needs something different, you can choose another profile or make your own copy for that document only, without changing any other document.
Who is this for? Linguists (users with the Vendor role) and anyone else with a task on the document. You can use this tab on any document you have a task on; no extra permission is needed.
Before you start: Open the document in the editor from your task, as described in How to access projects assigned to your user.
ℹ️ Note: This tab is different from the Sous-Chef Suggestion tab in the editor menu, described in wxrks Editor Menu for Vendors. That tab generates a one-off suggestion for one segment, just for you. The Sous Chef Profile tab sets the instructions the AI uses for the whole document.
See which profile applies
In the menu at the top of the right-hand panel, click Suggestions. It's usually already open when the editor loads.
At the bottom of the Suggestions panel, click the Sous Chef Profile tab, next to CAT Info. If the tab area is collapsed, click the arrow at the right end of the tab row to open it.
Read the selected profile and the line under it, which says where the profile comes from:
Inherited from project, Inherited from org unit, or Inherited from account: the default chosen at that level.
Inherited from the org unit language pair or Inherited from the account language pair: a profile chosen for this document's exact language pair.
Set for this work unit: your own profile for this document.
Selected for this work unit (shared profile): a shared profile someone picked for this document only.
No profile applies to this work unit.: nothing is set at any level, so the AI translates without a profile.
Below that, a table lists what the profile says: Domain, Audience, Formality, Tone, Creativity, and User prompt (the written brief). Fields the profile leaves empty aren't shown.
wxrks checks the document first, then the project, the Organizational Unit, and the account, and uses the first profile it finds. For the full order, see Sous Chef Agents Explained.
Use a different profile for this document
Open the dropdown and choose another profile. The change is saved right away and applies to this document only.
The dropdown lists your account's shared profiles, plus any profile set for this document. After you pick a shared profile, the line under the dropdown reads Selected for this work unit (shared profile).
To go back to the profile your document inherits, choose None. That removes the choice you made for this document. The dropdown then shows the inherited profile again, with its Inherited from … line.
Adjust a profile for this document
You can't change a profile that other documents use. Instead, make a copy for this document and adjust the copy.
With the profile selected, click the copy icon (Create a copy of this profile for this work unit).
In Copy profile to this work unit, change what you need:
Name: starts as the original name followed by (this work unit), for example "Legal Compliance (this work unit)".
Domain, Audience, Formality, Tone, and User prompt: prefilled from the original profile. In the editor, all of them are plain text, so you can type any formality or tone.
Click Save.
wxrks shows Sous Chef Profile saved, selects the copy, and the line under the dropdown reads Set for this work unit. The original profile stays unchanged for every other document.
The copy keeps the original's Creativity level. You can't change creativity in the editor.
To change your copy later, select it and click the pencil icon (Edit this work unit's profile).
To start from an empty profile instead, click the + icon (New profile for this work unit) and fill in the same fields.
⚠️ Warning: Fill in at least one of Domain, Audience, Formality, Tone, or User prompt. Save stays disabled until you do. A profile with no instructions would turn Sous Chef instructions off for this document instead of falling back to the project's profile.
What changes after you switch
The AI suggestions generated for this document from then on follow the new profile.
Segments that are already translated don't change.
Other documents in the project, including the same file in other languages, keep their own profile.
When you can't change the profile
The controls are greyed out. The document is delivered, cancelled, or expired, so its profile can only be viewed.
"Only account admins can change a shared profile. Use the copy button to adjust it for this work unit." You tried to edit a profile that's shared across the account. Use the copy icon instead.
Character limits. Each field shows a counter. If you go over a limit, the field turns red and shows "Maximum N characters", and Save stays disabled until you shorten it. Limits: Name 100, Domain 200, Audience 1,000, Formality 100, Tone 100, User prompt 5,000.
Account Admins and Project Managers set the profiles for the account, Organizational Units, and projects. See How to set up Sous Chef Profiles for your account, Organizational Units, and projects.
