How to use the Sous Chef profile tab in the Editor

The Sous Chef profile tab in the Editor shows which Sous Chef profile applies to the work unit you have open (its domain, formality, tone, audience, instructions and creativity) and where it comes from. From the same tab, you can preview how changes would translate a segment, and save them for this work unit.

Before you start

  • Who can use it: anyone who opens the work unit in the Editor through a task, such as vendors, Project Managers and Account Admins. See All about wxrks roles.

  • Augmented Actions must be on for your account or Organizational Unit (a subdivision of your account, such as a team or client). Otherwise the tab says Augmented Actions are disabled. See wxrks Augmented Actions.

  • Read-only work units: you can generate variants, but you can't change or save the profile.

ℹ️ Note: profiles for the account, Organizational Units, language pairs and projects are set up outside the Editor. See How to set up Sous Chef Profiles.

Open the tab

In the Editor, click the chef hat icon in the side panel to open Sous Chef profile, then click a segment.

Editor with the Sous Chef profile tab open. Red boxes mark the chef hat icon in the side panel, the profile picker with the line Inherited from account. Saving creates a copy for this work unit, the Profile values section, and the Generate variants and Save profile buttons at the bottom.

The tab has three parts:

  • The profile picker, with a line that says where the profile comes from.

  • Profile values: Domain, Formality, Tone, Audience, Instructions and Creativity level.

  • A bar at the bottom with the number of unsaved changes, Reset, Generate variants and Save profile. It stays in view while you scroll.

Check which profile applies

The line under the picker tells you where the profile comes from:

Line

What it means

Owned by this work unit

The profile belongs to this work unit only. Saving lets you update it or create another one.

Selected for this work unit (shared profile)

Someone picked a shared profile for this work unit. Saving creates a copy.

Inherited from project, Organizational Unit or account

The work unit uses the profile of a higher level. Saving creates a copy.

Inherited from the … language pair

The profile is mapped to this language pair. Saving creates a copy.

No profile yet

No profile applies. The values were inferred from the file.

To use another profile for this work unit, choose it in the picker. This only changes the work unit, not the project or the Organizational Unit. If you have unsaved changes, wxrks asks Discard unsaved changes? first: click Switch profile to continue, or Keep editing.

Preview changes with variants

Variants show how the profile translates the selected segment. Generating them never saves anything.

  1. Change the Profile values you want to try. Each changed field shows Changed and the saved value next to it, and the bar counts the unsaved changes.

  2. Click Generate variants. The Variants for segment section shows the variants, generated with the values in the form, saved or not. Each variant also shows the neighboring segments as context. To generate new ones, click Generate again.

  3. To use a variant, click the button under it: Apply to current and next when the variant includes the following segment, or Apply suggestion.

To go back to the saved values, click Reset.

Variants for segment 6, with the note Generated with your 1 unsaved change. Nothing was saved. Red box 1 marks the 1 unsaved change counter in the bottom bar, red box 2 the Variants section with three variants, and red box 3 the Apply to current and next button of the first variant.

Save the profile for this work unit

Save profile is the only action that writes the profile. It applies to this work unit only, including its pre-translation.

  1. Click Save profile. The Save to this work unit window opens.

  2. Choose what to save:

    • If the work unit uses a shared or inherited profile, wxrks saves your values as a new profile for this work unit. The Name starts as the original profile's name followed by (this work unit); you can change it (up to 100 characters). The original profile stays as it is for every other work unit.

    • If the work unit already has its own profile, choose Update that profile, or Create another profile with a new name.

  3. Click Save.

Save to this work unit window. Red box 2 marks the Name field, filled with the profile name followed by (this work unit), and the note Applies to this work unit only, including its pre-translation. Red box 3 marks the Save button.

ℹ️ Note: a shared profile is never changed from the Editor. Only Account Admins change shared profiles, in Settings > AI > Sous Chef profiles.

Save profile stays disabled, with a hint, while:

  • no value has changed;

  • every value is empty except Creativity level;

  • Instructions has more than 5,000 characters.

Where the old Sous Chef options went

The Sous Chef Profile tab that used to sit inside CAT Info was removed. Everything it showed is now in the Sous Chef profile tab. The old Tone & Style Shelf became Profile values. Its changes used to affect the suggestion only; now you choose between previewing them (Generate variants) and saving them (Save profile).
