Formatting Target Text in the Editor

Formatting Target Text in the Editor

Learn how to apply Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikethrough formatting directly to your target text inside the wxrks Editor.

Audience and Permissions

This feature is available to any translator, reviewer, or editor with edit access to a segment's target field. It works in both the Editor and the Review screen, as long as the segment is editable.

Important: Inline text formatting only appears for files of type DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. It is not available for other file formats.

Key Concepts

Term

Description

Formatting toolbar

A small floating toolbar that appears above (or below) your text selection, offering Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, and Clear Formatting.

Active format

A formatting option currently applied to the selected text, shown highlighted in the toolbar.

Clear formatting

Removes all formatting (Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough) from the selected text.

How to Format Target Text

  1. Open a segment in the Editor or Review screen for a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file.

  2. Click into the target text field and select the text you want to format.

  3. The formatting toolbar appears automatically above your selection. If there isn't enough room above (for example, when the segment is near the top of the screen), the toolbar appears below the selection instead.

  4. Click one of the formatting buttons to apply it to the selected text: - B — Bold - I — Italic - U — Underline - S — Strikethrough

  5. To remove a specific format, click the same button again. The button shows as active (highlighted) while that format is applied to the selection.

  6. To remove all formatting from the selected text at once, click the Clear Formatting icon at the end of the toolbar.

Important Behavior and Edge Cases

  • The formatting toolbar only appears when you have an active text selection. It disappears as soon as you click elsewhere, start typing, or collapse your selection.

  • You can combine multiple formats on the same text (for example, Bold and Italic together).

  • If your selection already has a format fully applied, clicking that format's button removes it; if the selection is partially formatted, clicking the button applies the format to the entire selection.

  • Formatting is preserved when the file is exported, so Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikethrough applied in the Editor will appear in the downloaded DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file.

  • This toolbar does not appear on read-only segments or in source text fields — it only applies to editable target text.

Troubleshooting

  • The formatting toolbar doesn't appear when I select text. Confirm the file type is DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX. Other file types do not support inline formatting. Also confirm the segment's target field is editable (not locked, confirmed, or read-only).

  • My formatting disappeared after editing the text. Make sure you are not selecting across a tag or special character, which can affect how formatting wraps the text. Re-select only the text you want to format and apply it again.

  • I can't tell if a format is applied. Place your cursor inside the formatted text and check the toolbar — the corresponding button will appear highlighted.
